On the Procedure Log, you may record your role as the following:
You may record your role as the following:
Primary Surgeon
Record surgical procedures where you assumed the role of the primary surgeon.
Primary Surgeon & Anesthesiologist
Record the surgical procedure performed as well as the anesthesia you administered.
Anesthesiologist Only
The only procedure recorded should be the anesthesia administered.
First Assistant
Each resident is responsible for logging his/her own case experience, regardless of role. This allows each resident to manage their own surgical log. In instances where multiple residents participate in a surgical procedure, and each records their own role, the surgical case will be entered multiple times. Each resident should record the case using the same Patient ID/MRN number. This will ensure accurate case reports.
FAQs
Am I responsible for recording my role as 1st assistant on a case?
Yes. In the past, it may have been your Program’s protocol that a senior resident was responsible for logging the roles of all residents (i.e. primary surgeon, 1stassistant, and second assistant) involved in a surgical procedure. The new RSL is designed so that each resident records his or her own roles in each case. This allows each resident to manage their own surgical log.
Won’t that mean that certain cases will be entered twice?
Yes. In instances where multiple residents participate in a surgical procedure, and each records their own role, the surgical case will be entered multiple times. Each resident should record the case using the same Patient ID/MRN number. This will ensure accurate case reports.
Can I record my experience as a second assistant?
No. The purpose of this RSL is to capture experiences of the primary surgeon, first assistant, and any anesthesia procedures. You are welcome to maintain a personal log of experiences as second assistant.
